Facebook has been among the leaders in the world in terms of innovation for the past decade. The company has been able to revolutionize not only Social Media, but also how we communicate in general. With their latest innovations in VR and AR technologies, Facebook has become the world leader in this domain. And recently, Lahore has become the first city in Pakistan to have a Facebook Innovations Lab.
So what is the Facebook Innovations Lab?
To give a bit of a preface, the Lab was inaugurated in LUMS, in collaboration with Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom, Ignite and National Incubation Centre (NIC) Lahore. At the inauguration ceremony on the 3rd of April, Facebook’s Head of Startup Programs, James Linn, had this to say:
“We are proud to launch the Facebook Innovation Lab as a part of our long term commitment to support innovation and the developer community in Pakistan,”
The Facebook Innovations lab is set to be a hub for technological innovation. Moreover, the lab will feature workshops and training for startups. The main theme behind this initiative is to assist startups and entrepreneurs by giving them a platform for their products.
While in many ways, the Facebook Innovations Lab is no different that the Plan 9 Incubator, or any other incubator by the PITB, this one comes from Facebook. This could mean a few good things.
- International Exposure
- World-wide outreach for your ideas
- Mentor-ship from big names from around the world.
- And ofcource, being a part of the Facebook Family, which in itself is quite prestigious.
Other than providing Infrastructure, the Facebook Innovations Lab will also be pivotal in launching Augmented Reality in Pakistan. This might aid in bringing VR and AR to the mainstream in Pakistan. The world has already begun adopting the technology for various practical applications. And it is about time Pakistan joins the race.
Also, participants of the Facebook Innovations Lab will get access to the FB Start initiative, that connects startups around the world and provides support and outreach to businesses.
” We are proud to launch Facebook Innovation Lab as a part of our long term commitment to support innovation and the developer community in Pakistan. Facebook is committed to building an impactful community in Pakistan and we believe it is important to support businesses, start-ups and the individuals who are driving innovation to grow and succeed.Jason Lin
